A "Sweet" Big Brother Quilt

My friend Jean (sweets4ever on Craftster) just had a baby that I made this quilt for. But that baby has an older brother! I had just started quilting around the time I became a moderator, and the older brother was born just previous to this, so I had never made him a quilt!

I thought it would be fun to make him one too so he wouldn’t be left out. I happened to have a really fun rocket panel in my stash, along with a remnant I had picked up of this ray gun fabric.

The colors seemed to work together, so I pieced this bright quilt top together by cutting the panel in two, rearranging it and bulking it out with some strip pieced checkerboard.

For the back I created a  simple chevron out of half square triangles to be a focal point, and used up some of the leftover strips to create some more checkerboard.

I quilted around the squares in the panel, up and down the checkerboard, and then I outlined 3 of the rockets in each panel.  All throughout this project I had been trying to figure out some way of using the blue stripe fabric, but never quite fit it in, but I realized it would work ok for the binding!

I’m not sure if I’m pleased or embarrassed that all of the fabrics for this came out of my stash!

Giddy-Up Cowboy Quilt

I've been working on this project for my friend kittykill since I found a remnant of the cowboy fabric (the light blue background with cowboys and fences in the center of some of the blocks). I was going to make a table runner or something, but then I kept finding more and more fabric that would work well together, so I ended up making a lap quilt! The dark blue bull riding fabric is especially funny to me, it works perfectly in this quilt but I can't imagine many other uses for it Smiley

I used the inspiration from this quilt~

Besides the above mentioned, I got the cowboy boot fabric, the red bandana fabric and the cowboy hats specifically for this project, but a surprising amount came from my stash and worked well, including the white and tan print, the brown with white polka dots, the brown with white dots in a horseshoe pattern, the blue bandana on the back, and the binding, which I think kind of looks like rail fences Cheesy

I pieced the back from an extra block I made for the front and then realized it would too gigantic, plus a strip I cut off the front and then other fabrics I had left.

I quilted each section differently, in a square spiral pattern in the block section, vertical lines in the small strip section and horizontal lines in the larger strip section.

I guess I didn't take any pics that show the binding very well, this one might a little bit.

Sorry I had to model the quilt on my love seat, my mom usually holds them up for me but she has a broken shoulder and nobody else has been around (except for the nephs, who are too short Smiley )

Phoenix Quilts Charity

Phoenix Quilts is dedicated to sending quilts to people who have lost their homes in the wildfires. We're talking 750+ quilts! I think this is a wonderful project and want to get some of my quilt tops finished and sent out! I need to get some things wrapped up around here before I send in my commitment!

Would you like to help too? Phoenix Quilts

Sock Monkey Quilt

Sock Monkey Quilt

A while back I got a grab bag of 12 pounds of fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop. It had some great stuff in it, including several pieces (around 1/3 yard each) from Erin Michael's 5 Funky Monkey line. I finally decided to use it for a baby quilt for my dear friend's first baby.

I slightly altered the 4 patch pattern from Quilts for Kids to include more fabrics and increased the size of the blocks so I could get the number of them I wanted. I used 4 pieces of monkey fabric, plus two blenders from my stash for the front, and two other pieces of monkey fabric for the back. This whole quilt was from my stash besides the green solid on the back (Ikea sheet!) and a little solid blue for the binding. Also, I got my brother to buy the sheet for me :)

Front

Back! My first pieced back, it was going to be a strip all the way across but I love the brown polka dots and decided this would be cute.

Maybe next time I will actually do the binding "correctly" and handstitch the back. I'm still cheating and machine stitching it.

I still have some of this fabric left, definitely enough to piece another baby quilt (with a lot of sashing or blenders or something!) My friend really liked it!
